◊ 2010-11 – Barcelona FC

Messi starts his season with a hat-trick in a 4–0 victory over Sevilla FC in the Supercopa de España on 21st August 2010. He then suffered an ankle injury due to a heavy tackle by Atlético Madrid defender Tomáš Ujfaluši at the Vicente Calderón Stadium on 19th September 2010. David Villa, while talking about Messi’s injury, stated “the tackle on Messi was brutal” but also added that the defender “didn’t go into the tackle to hurt”. Irrespective of his injury, Messi won the 2010 FIFA Ballon d’Or while defeating his own teammates Xavi and Iniesta. He is placed second behind Cristiano Ronaldo in the Pichichi trophy with 31 goals and 18 assists.

He scored a hat-trick against Atlético Madrid in a 3–0 win at the Camp Nou on 5th February and Barcelona broke the record for most consecutive league wins with 16 victories.
