Brief History of the Premier League Golden Boot Award
The Golden Boot was given to the League’s top scorer since the inception of Premier League in 1992. The English top division clubs decided to form a new league after their detachment from ‘The Football League’ in 1992 and they started the league as a commercially independent tournament. The Premier League had no sponsor for its inaugural season so the first winner of the Golden Boot, Teddy Sheringham, received the trophy as just the “Premier League Golden Boot” in 1993. The following year, ‘Carling’ agreed to sponsor the league and signed a £12 million deal with the Premier League for four years. The golden boot was then officially named as the ‘Carling Golden Boot’ in 1994. The award was then named as the ‘Barclaycard Golden Boot’ due to the sponsorship change in 2001. Finally, Barclays became the official sponsor of the Premier League and the award was named as the “Barclays Golden Boot” in 2005.
English striker Teddy Sheringham won the first ever Premier League golden boot it the inaugural year of Premier League in 1993. He scored 22 goals in 41 games while playing for Tottenham Hotspur that season. But sadly, even after scoring that much goal, Spurs finished that season in the 8th place of the League Table with just 59 points.
