India Dominates in their First Face-Off with Age-Old Cricket Rival Pakistan in World Cup 2015

Recently before the start of the much awaited ICC World Cup 2015, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi tweeted, “I wish our flamboyant vice-captain @imVkohli the very best for the upcoming campaign. The entire nation has a lot of hopes on him.” And it seems that the vice-captain of India Virat Kohli took it seriously and fulfilled what he re-tweeted to Modi, saying, “Thank You for your best wishes @narendramodi sir. We are ready to give it our all. Jai Hind!” Two of the best teams participated in this championship, India and Pakistan, contesting against each other in the fourth match of the ICC world cup 2015 on 15the February, 2015. The match was played at Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, Australia. India won the toss and elected to bat first. Englishmen Ian Gould and Richard Kettleborough served their duties as the official umpires and Australian umpire Steve Davis was selected to serve as the third umpire. One of the most experienced match officials from Sri Lanka, Ranjan Madugalle, was chosen as the match referee.

It is reported that the tickets of this match were sold out within 12 minutes which is a record itself. India has had a 5-0 clean sweep against Pakistan in the World Cup as they came face-to-face in 1992, 1996, 1999, 2003 and 2011, where every time team India had the upper hand against Pakistan. The two teams competed against each other at the World Cup at the PCA Stadium in Mohali in the ICC World Cup 2011 semi-final, where India won the match by 29 runs. Regarding the continues losses against India, former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq said, “I think we had our chances in Sydney (1992), Bangalore (1996), Manchester (1999) and even at Mohali (2011). I can’t find a suitable word to describe what goes wrong when we chase against India, but it’s more like a mental blockage of players on which I’m sure Pakistan’s team management will be working on.”

According to TV ratings firm Initiative, an India vs. Pakistan match is estimated to attract up to three hundred million television viewers. In front of millions of eyes, the much-anticipated Pool B match between India and Pakistan started with hopes for both of the teams. The match is expected to add a brilliant page in the book of one of the greatest cricket rivalries. India started to bat in the first inning and made a 300/7 runs tally. Opening batsmen Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan tried their best to make a good base for a substantial inning. Virat Kohli, one of the very best cricketers of recent times, showed his jaw dropping talent and made 107 runs from 126 balls with 8 fours. His century is the first century scored by any Indian batsman against Pakistan in the World Cup platform and only the second century by any batsman in India- Pakistan matches in the World Cup. Virat today broke the record of India’s highest personal run against Pakistan in world cup platform by the Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s 98. Suresh Raina also played a blistering inning and made a quick 74 in just 56 balls with a strike rate of 132.14.

Pakistan, on the other hand, tried their best to resist the Indian batsmen with a pretty good bowling discipline, with just 4 extras consisting of 3 wide and 1 no balls. With an aim to score 301 runs within 50 overs, Pakistan batsmen started their inning with Ahmed Shehzad and Younis Khan. Mohammed Shami was at his best and took the wicket of Younis Khan in the fourth over of the second inning. Pakistan tried to take control of the match with more runs between the wicket rather than taking risky shots. Ahmed Shehzad and Sohaib Maqsood were taken by Umesh Yadav in the 24th over after which Pakistan slowly surrendered and couldn’t even cope up with the required run rates. Misbah-ul-Haq tried his best and made 76 runs in 84balls and scored 9 fours and a sixer. Mohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami had a tight grip over the Pakistan inning, and gave 35 runs each in their 9 over spells. The wicket of Misbah-ul-Haq on the 46th over was theoretically the end of Pakistan’s hope which was practically ended at the 47th over with the wicket of Sohail Khan. Pakistan was able to make just 224 runs and India won the match by 76 runs to continue their legacy over Pakistan in the World Cup with clean sweep of 6-0.
