1975-2011 there have been a total of ten world cups and out of the ten Australia has emerged as the most successful World Cup team ever. Australia has won the tournament 4 times, next in line are India and The West Indies who have won the tournament twice. Pakistan and Sri Lanka have won the tournament only once. India being the reigning world champions will enter the 2015 World Cup in Australia in the hope of retaining the title and become the second most successful ODI team in World Cups ever after Australia. Its said that records are made to be broken and several teams and players will be trying to fulfill their desire of lifting the cup and giving the best performance ever. So here is the list of ICC World Cup Records that has been set so far.
Most runs in World Cups
Sachin Tendulkar is the most successful batsmen in all the world cups ever held. He has scored the most runs amounting to 2278 runs in 45 matches with an average of 56.95. The second and third place players in the list of most successful batsmen are Rickey Ponting and Brian Lara having averages of 45.86 and 42.24 respectively. There is no one in line recently who is going to challenge these greats. Sadly we will not be seeing the record of Sachin Tendulkar to be broken, it will take some time.
Highest Individual Score
Gary Kirsten of South Africa has the highest individual score of world cup of 188* against UAE. Sadly there are only two players in this list who will be playing this year’s world cup i.e. AB De Villiers and Tilkaratne Dilshan. Well this one of icc world cup records is open to all and every batsmen dreams of braking this record.
Most Successful Bowler
Glen McGrath has been the most successful bowler of the world cup history. He claimed 71 wickets at an economy rate of 3.97 runs per over. Muttaih Murlidharan and Wasim Akram are the next most successful bowlers of the tournament respectively. Sadly only one bowler i.e. Lasith Malinga of Sri Lanka is in the list who is still playing cricket and he can challenge the icc world cup records otherwise this record is there for a long haul.
Best Bowling Figures
Glen McGrath of Australia has the best bowling figures of any world cup i.e. 7 wickets in 7 overs giving away only 15 runs against Namibia. This one of icc world cup records is still to be broken and awaits a new leader.
Most Successful Fielder
Ricky Ponting of Australia is the most successful fielder of any World Cups. He has the most number of catches in world cups i.e. 28 catches in 46 matches. The next two fielder in this line are Sanath Jaysuriya and Chris Cairns respectively. This Record is also there for the long haul since there is no player in the list of top 20 who could challenge the record held by Ricky Ponting.
