Helena became a Paralympics athlete after a permanent injury to her thumbs made her eligible for the games. She became the first British sailor to win gold in Paralympics and was also anointed Member of the Order of British Empire.

Adored by fans around the world both for her performance and for her lively nature, she has 4 gold medals in the last two Paralympics , became the youngest athlete ever in Britain’s team in Summer Paralympics 2008 at the age of 13 and also won the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year Award in 2008.

She was born without her right arm and hand but still she participates in competitions in which regular athletes also participate. She is the world’s youngest Paralympian, she was only 11 when she participated in 2000 Summer Paralympics. She has competed in both the Olympics and Paralympics in 2008 and 2012. Till now she has won 3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal.

A 9 hour operation on a vascular myelopathy around her spinal cord, left her without the use of her legs but that didn’t keep her down, During her rehabilitation she got into wheelchair sports and then there was no turning back. Often described as the most dominant player in sports, she has lost only 25 of her 700 singles matches and had been world no 1 from 1999 to her retirement in 2013 and ending her career with a winning streak of 470 games! She has 3 Paralympics Gold medals and 23 Grand Slams to her name.

6. David Lee Pearson

At number 6 is David Lee Pearson, a British para-equestrian. Pearson was born with Arthrogryposis but still his determination to succeed has made him one of the finest para-equestrian ever. He has won 10 gold medals at Paralympics and has also won 6 World Championship and 3 European Championship. Currently his medal tally includes a unbelievable 34 gold medals at professional level.  In 2001 he was appointed Member of the Order of British Empire for services to Disabled Sport.

At number 5 is Franz Nietlspach, a Swiss hand cyclist. He is a sporting legend and has won 14 gold, 6 silver and 1 bronze medals at the Paralympics and had participated in every Summer Paralympics between 1979 and 2008. He had also participated briefly in table tennis during 1976 and 1980 Paralympics but he is remembered for his hand cycle which propelled him to fame. He has also held political office in Switzerland.

He is one of the most successful Paralympics athletes ever winning 18 gold medals and setting nine world records. He has also been named BC Disabled Athlete of the Year thrice.
