Who Can Win the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup

Now that we are only a little over a month away from the beginning of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, it is time to start making predictions for the prestigious soccer tournament. While 24 of the best international teams in the world will play in the FIFA World Cup starting on June 6, there are only a handful of teams that can actually walk away with the trophy. Here is a breakdown of the six teams that have a realistic chance of winning the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Who Can Win the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup

Who Can Win the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup

United States

While they are currently ranked second in the world, the United States is the favorite to win the FIFA World Cup. The World Cup odds are 3/1 for the United States. This team is anchored by two of the best players in the world, Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan, but there are some major question marks at the goalkeeper position. Hope Solo is the only goalie on the team to see significant action on the national team, but she has shown erratic behavior over the last year. If the United States does not get solid play in net, then they are going to see an early exit.

The current World Cup odds for the German team to win the tournament are 10/3. Despite being the top ranked team in the world, the Germans are not considered the favorites. Germany was able to win the Women’s World Cup in 2003 and 2007, and they will look to become the first team to win the tournament three times. Much like the men’s┬áteam, the German women’s national soccer team has great attackers while maintaining stout defense. This team will also be aided by a relatively easy group round. There is not a more fundamentally sound team in the world, so look for Germany to make a deep run in the tournament.

Japan has to be considered a major threat to win the World Cup after winning the tournament four years ago. The defending champions are also the fourth ranked team in the world, so they still have a lot of skill remaining on the team. Despite the high ranking and great success at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, Japan is only an 8/1 favorite to win the tournament.

The Brazilian team is tied with Japan at 8/1 odds to win the 2015 FIFA World Cup despite being the seventh ranked team in the world. Brazil has never won the World Cup, but they remain one of the most popular picks to win the tournament because they have the best player in the world, Marta. While Marta’s skills are certainly enough to take Brazil far, she will need some help from her teammates in order to make a deep run in the tournament.

France is entering the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup under the radar despite being ranked third in the world. France’s best finish in the World Cup came in 2011 when they finished in fourth place. France’s team has greatly improved over the last few years, so there should be no worries about their lack of success at such a high profile soccer tournament.

The final team with a realistic chance to win the Women’s World Cup this year is Canada. They may be ranked as the eighth best team in the world, but Canada is going to have the support from the home crowd the entire tournament. Host teams are known to make deep runs in the World Cup, so it hard to count out a very talented Canadian team with the home field advantage.
