The Spanish giants had arrived at the halfway point in the Spanish League season with nothing but wins in their kitty, and a lead of nine points over Atletico Madrid in the second place. Valencia lags behind by 11 points, and defending champion Real Madrid are a massive 19 points behind Barca. The comeback gave this season’s La Liga chart leaders their first La Liga victory at Anoeta Stadium, since the year 2007. Thus, they not only managed to break a streak of five losses and two draws, but also continued their winning streak this season, across all the competitions, gaining victory in 29 matches since their last loss in August, in the Spanish Super Cup.

Real Sociedad seemed all set to extend their dominance over Barca at their home ground after the early goals scored in their favour by Juanmi Jimenez and Willian Jose. However, Suarez set Paulinho up before the halftime of the match, and the Uruguayan international himself scored two goals in the second half. Messi took over after that, securing three points with a free kick which he scored when the match had five minutes left to end and also secured his position of being the top scorer of La Liga season 2017-18.
