English footballer Danny Welbeck currently plays for the English Premier League side Arsenal besides appearing for the English national team as a noted forward. He progressed through the youth academy system of Manchester United and made his senior squad debut for Red Devils in 2008. Welbeck was an integral part of the Manchester United squad that achieved the title of 2008 FIFA Club World Cup and also the League Cup in season 2008-2009. He was transferred to Arsenal for a total fee of £16 million in September 2014 and became a part of the starting-11 of the Gunners since then.

Besides playing for several English clubs such as Manchester United, Sunderland and Arsenal, Welbeck became a necessary part of the England national team since he made his international debut against Ghana in March 2011. He scored his first international goal in a friendly victory against Belgium on 2nd June 2012. Besides friendly and team-tours, Welbeck was also a part of the squad that represented England in the UEFA Euro 2012 and the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
He was initially spotted by a local team named Fletcher Moss and finally picked up by the youth academy system of Manchester United at the age of just 8. Welbeck made his debut for the club’s U-18 squad in a match against Sunderland on 8th April 2006. He made 9 goals in 28 appearances the following season which includes the winning goal of FA Youth Cup. Welbeck signed his first trainee contract with Red Devils in July 2007 and made his senior team debut against Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in Sami Al-Jaber’s testimonial match on 21st January 2008. He made his competitive debut for the club in the League Cup Third Round match against Middlesbrough on 23rd September 2008, and made his EPL debut against Stoke City on 15th November 2008. Welbeck finally made his Champions League debut for the Red Devils against Beşiktaş in November 2009.
After Alex Ferguson’s son Darren Ferguson became the manager of Preston North End, he signed Welbeck on loan from Manchester for the 2009–10 season on 25th January 2010. But due to his repeated knee injury, Welbeck returned to Manchester United on 16th March. Welbeck was again loaned out to Sunderland for the 2010–11 season on 12th August 2010 and made his debut for the club against Birmingham City on 14th August 2010. He scored his debut goal for Sunderland against Chelsea on 14th November 2010. Due to his injury in a match against Wigan Athletic on 23rd April 2011, he returned to Manchester United for the treatment.
Welbeck was included in the starting squad in a 2011 FA Community Shield match against Manchester City on 7th August 2011 at Wembley Stadium. He scored his first goal of the season from a cross by Tom Cleverley against Tottenham Hotspur on 22nd August 2011. Welbeck scored two goals in the Champions’ League group match against Basel on 27th September. He was nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year Award in 2012 due to his amazing performance in the previous season. Danny Welbeck then signed a new four-year contract extension with Manchester United on 22nd August 2012. He was also the part of the squad that defeated Wigan Athletic in the 2013 FA Community Shield on 11th August at Wembley Stadium. Even after scoring six goals in six Premier League matches between December 2013 and January 2014, his relationship with the club deteriorated which was then clearly in front of the whole world after he made a statement that “I’ve been playing on the left for a while and it’s got to the time when I want to stake a place up front.” Welbeck finally leave Manchester United to join Arsenal with a total of 29 goals in 142 matches for the Red Devils.
Welbeck signed a long-term contract with Arsenal on 2nd September 2014 for a total transfer fee of £16 million. He made his debut for the gunners on 13th September 2014 against the previous season’s Premier League champion Manchester City. Welbeck scored his first goal for the club against Aston Villa on 20th September followed by an amazing hat-trick in the UEFA Champions League match against Galatasaray on 1st October 2014. After a horrific knee injury, Welbeck was out of the team for eight months in season 2016-17 and made his comeback against Preston in the FA Cup match on 7th January 2017. He was also the part of the Arsenal side which defeated Chelsea in the 2017 FA Cup Final on 27th May and again in the 2017 FA Community Shield on 6th August 2017 at Wembley Stadium.
Welbeck was first introduced in the England senior team in a friendly against Ghana where he replaced Ashley Young at Wembley Stadium on 29th March 2011. He was then inducted in the 23-man squad for Roy Hodgson’s England team that participated in the UEFA Euro 2012 where he scored his first goal against Belgium on 2nd June 2012. Welbeck scored 4 goals in 2 qualification matches for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, against San Marino on 12th October 2012 and against Moldova on 6th September 2013. He scored twice in the first match of England at the UEFA Euro 2016 qualification against Switzerland on 8th September 2014 at St. Jakob-Park, Basel. Recently in March 2017, Danny Welbeck is selected for the 2018 FIFA World Cup preparation friendly matches of England squad.
Born to Ghanaian parents Elizabeth Welbeck and Victor Welbeck, Danny grew up in the Longsight neighborhood of Manchester along with his brother Chris. Despite Welbeck staying in England for his professional career, his family currently resides in Kumasi. He frequently visits his home country Ghana to spend quality times with his whole family during holidays. Recently Welbeck family built a school in Ghana with the support of the St Andrew Church Droylsden, Manchester.
