English footballer Eric Dier plays for the England national football team besides appearing regularly for the English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur. He generally plays as a defensive midfield but is also comfortable playing in several defensive positions such as a centre back or a right back. Dier grew up in his native country Portugal and started his football journey with Sporting CP. He moved to Tottenham in 2014 for five years with a transfer fee of £4 million. Besides playing for the clubs, Dier made his international debut for the English team in 2015 and was a part of the squad that participated in UEFA Euro 2016.

Due to his mother’s job in the hospitality program at UEFA Euro 2004, Dier and his family moved to Portugal leaving his birthplace Gloucestershire, England. The Dier family with Eric Dier and his five siblings spent a year in the Algarve region before moving to Lisbon. His parents came back to England in 2010 but Dier stayed in Portugal after he took admission to the Sporting CP’s youth academy. He was first spotted by a teacher of International Preparatory School in Lisbon named Miguel Silva. Silva referred him to the scouts of Sporting CP where Dier joined at the age of just eight. Eric Dier Early Career

Besides Sporting, several big football clubs such as Arsenal and Manchester United also tried to sign him as a young talent. After Dier signed a professional contract with Sporting, the club sold his 50% economic rights to Quality Football Ireland Limited. Later they brought back the rights by selling Filipe Chaby’s 50% rights in February 2012. He joined Everton on loan in January 2011 where Sporting made a statement on the loan as it was “an opportunity for the athlete to grow in a more competitive and demanding environment.” He achieved the U18 Premier League title with Everton in season 2010-11.

Dier made his debut for the Sporting CP’s B team in a Segunda Liga match against Atlético Portugal on 26th August 2012. He then scored his first professional senior goal against Benfica B from a direct free-kick on 4th November 2012. Dier signed a five-year contract on 2nd August 2014 with Tottenham Hotspur for a transfer fee of £4 million. He made his debut for the club in a Premier League match against West Ham on 16th August and scored his first goal for the Spurs in the same match. He made his home debut at the White Hart Lane against Queens Park Rangers eight days later. Dier was first included in the starting-11 of Tottenham in the League Cup final against Chelsea on 1st March 2015. For his previous season’s performance, he signed a contract extension with the club on 9th September 2015. Dier scored the first goal of the 2015-16 season for Tottenham in an EPL game against Stoke City on 15th August 2015. He again signed a new contract with the club on 13th September 2016 which will make him stay in the club till 2021. Dier captained the Spurs for the first time in an EFL Cup match against Liverpool on 25th October 2016.

Dier made his international debut for the England U-18 team against Slovakia on 16th November 2011. He then made his competitive debut for the U-21 team against Scotland on 13th August 2013. Dier was first named in the England senior squad by manager Roy Hodgson on 5th November 2015, and made his debut against Spain at at Alicante’s Estadio José Rico Pérez Stadium eight days later. Dier is the grandson of the president of Cheltenham Town and former secretary of The Football Association Ted Croker. He is also the great-nephew of former Charlton Athletic player Peter Croker. Dier’s father Jeremy played tennis in professional level. Eric Dier and his girlfriend Maria Hansen have been together for years and they attended the 2016 World Cup. The couple enjoyed summer holiday breaks with Eric’s teammate Dele Alli with his partner Ruby Mae.
