The FIFA U-17 World Cup was initially founded as the FIFA U-16 World Championship in 1985 in China. The competition took the inspiration from the Lion City Cup which is the first under-16 football competition in the world. The Lion City Cup was organised by the Football Association of Singapore in 1977 for the first time and later FIFA’s then secretary-general Joe Blatter first organised the FIFA U-16 World Championship in 1985. The age limit of the players has been raised from 16 to 17 from the 1991 World Cup onwards and the tournament was renamed as the FIFA U17 World Cup in 2007. The World Cup has been played every two years since its inception in 1985. The last FIFA U17 World Cup 2015 was hosted by Chile and Nigeria won the prestigious cup. The FIFA U17 World Cup starts with a group phase with 4 national teams competing against each other in each individual group. The highest and second highest point scorers of each group then advance to the knockout phase along with 4 best third-place scorers in the group phase matches. From here, the winning team advances to the next phase and the defeated team is eliminated until two national squads remain to play the final match. Besides the final match between the two winners of the semi-finals, the third place match is also played between the losing semi-finalists.

A total of 16 teams, divided into 4 groups of 4 national teams each, have participated in this tournament from 1985 to 2005. The tournament was then expanded from 16 teams to 24 teams from 2007 onwards where 6 groups were made having 4 national teams in each group. The most and the second-most point scorers of each group along with 4 most point scoring third place achievers advances to the Round of 16 phase of the tournament. Additional 30 minutes was added if the matches remained tied after the first 90 minute until 2011, but after that, the extra time was eliminated from 2011 to avoid the excessive burnout of the young players. And since then the match progress to the penalties at the end of first 90 minutes the score remains tied.
