Mats Julian Hummels, Commonly known as just Mats Hummels, currently plays as a central defender for the Bundesliga Side Bayern Munich besides appearing regularly for the German national football team. A product of the youth academy system of Bayern Munich, Hummels started his professional football journey with the reserve team. He then spent a season with Borussia Dortmund on loan before signing for them permanently in early 2008. After spending seven seasons, he came back to his former side Bayern Munich in 2016.

He joined the youth academy system of Bayern Munich in 1995, at the age of just six. He went through a rigorous training schedule and promoted through several age-level squads in the academy between 1995 and 2006. Hummels then made his senior debut with the reserve side of Bayern in 2006. The same year, he signed his first professional contract with the club on 19th December 2006. His performance for the reserve side caught the attention of the first-team officials. Hummels then made his Bundesliga debut against 1. FSV Mainz 05 on 19th May 2007.

He joined fellow Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund on loan in January 2008. He quickly became the first-choice member of the squad upon his arrival. He became the first-choice centre-back in the 2010–11 season. Bayern Munich declared that Hummels would rejoin the club on 10th May 2016. He then signed a five-year contract with the club on 1st July 2016. Shortly after, he made his debut for Bayern in the 2016 DFL-Supercup final against Borussia Dortmund on 14th August 2016. He appeared in 42 matches in his debut season with Bayern while scoring on three occasions. He became the first-choice central defender of Bayern in the following 2017-18 season. Hummels played in almost all matches of that season while again scoring three times.

Born in North Rhine-Westphalia, to his parents Hermann Hummels and Ulla Holthoff, Mats Hummels is of pure German descent. His father, Hermann, was a former footballer and manager, and was also a youth coordinator of Bayern Munich. His mother, Ulla, is a sports journalist and former water polo player. Mats grew up in the Bergisch Gladbach city playing football with his brother Jonas Hummels during their childhood. Mats started dating his long-time girlfriend Cathy Fischer during his very early career at Bayern. Cathy is a German Television presenter and was named as Germany’s WAG of the year in 2013. The couple got married in June 2015 and had their first son on 11th January 2018.
