Miranda started his career at Coritiba; there he spent 2004-05 before joining Sochaux in France for 2005–06. After that, he went back to Brazil and joined São Paulo. In 2011, he went to Atlético Madrid. He earned domestic and European honours, before signing with Inter for a fee of 15 million EUR. Miranda debuted as a full-time international footballer in 2009. João Miranda Coritiba Career

After being part of the youth program of Coritiba, Miranda joined their senior team in 2004. He stayed there for the entire season, appearing in 89 matches in which he made 6 goals. In July 2005, he shifted to Sochaux in France, by signing a deal of four years. He appeared in 20 games for the club, which finished the season, acquiring a spot in the middle of the table. But he could not settle in the country. During his spell with the club, Coritiba succeeded in winning the Campeonato Paranaense in 2004.

In August 2006, he moved back to Brazil from France. He joined São Paulo FC on a loan. In March 2007, the player signed with São Paulo FC till 2011. Around the same time, the club earned the Campeonato Brasileiro 2006. He helped his team win the title again in 2007 and 2008, and was chosen for the “Team of the Year” both times. Even though the club failed to win any other title during his tenure, his individual displays did not go unnoticed, and he went on to be included in the “Team of the Year” again in 2009 and 2010. Miranda’s contract with São Paulo was to expire in July 2011; he decided not to renew his contract with the Brazillian team. In January, he signed a pre-contractual agreement of three years with Spanish giants Atlético Madrid, joining the team in July. He debuted in club competition for Atletico Madrid in August in a 4–0 win of Vitória S.C. in Europa League. The Brazilian international debuted in La Liga in September in a 1–0 defeat to Valencia CF.

He made his first goal in a match against Granada CF in March 2012; he thus led his team to a 2–0 win in the league. In April, he gave an average performance in Champions League in the team’s chase against Levante UD; Atlético, too lost the match with a score of 2–0. Miranda made his first European goal in the Europa League semi-final. The match ended in a 4–2 win over Valencia in April.

Miranda’s third goal for Atlético’s came in the team’s 4–1 Super Cup win over Chelsea in August 2012. In March 2013, he signed a renewal of his contract with the Spanish team; it kept him at the team till 2016. In the final of Copa del Rey in May, Miranda headed the winning goal. The match ended with the team’s 2–1 win over Real Madrid. He thus helped his team put an end to the streak of losses in 25 matches against Real since 1999. He helped Atletico Madrid with the first title in their league history of 17 years; as a result he got nominated as the best La Liga defender 2014.

In June 2015, the news became official that Internazionale in Serie A were bringing Miranda to the team. He joined the club on a loan of two years, for a fee of 4 million EUR; the contract included the obligation to pay an additional 11 million EUR upfront in July 2017. This condition was exercised after he debuted for the team in July. In August 2007, Miranda received the first invitation to join the national team, in a friendly game against Algeria. But, he failed to debut for Brazil in the match. A year later, he made his international appearance for the first time in a qualifier game of World Cup 2010. The match was held in April 2009 against Peru. Miranda also became a member of the squad that went to the Confederations Cup 2009.

He became one of the seven standby players for the team of Brazil that went to the FIFA World Cup 2014.
