Oliveira started his career at Benfica, and spent the major part of the tenure with the club being loaned out to different clubs in five different countries. He gained 70 caps for his national team during his youth career across different levels. Oliveira’s youth career began at Santa Maria, where he began in the year 1999, and continued till 2002. The next year, he went to join Braga, and during his association with the team till 2006, he was loaned to Bairro Misericórdia for 2003-04. He then went to join Benfica’s youth program at the age of 15, and stayed with it till 2009. He was a stunning scorer for both Braga and Benfica, after ending his youth career at Benfica, he went on to join the first team of the club in the pre-season friendly of 2008–09 against Estoril, after coach Quique Flores gave him his call up. He was also asked to be part of a match against Napoli in UEFA Cup, but he went back to the junior team. It also happened in 2009-10. He spent two seasons there.

After two seasons of call-ups and then returning to the junior teams, he made his debut in first division and as a professional footballer in January 2010, after he was loaned out to Rio Ave whom he represented for the first time in February against Leixões, in a match that ended with a score of 2–0. The loan was first extended for the whole season of 2010–11, but in August 2010, Paços de Ferreira absorbed him on the same terms, as he debuted in September, in a 1–1 draw at Marítimo, while in the next month, he helped Paços in scoring in a 2–1 win.

In October 2011, Oliveira debuted for Benfica in a 2–0 victory over Portimonense Portuguese Cup of the season, whilein January next year, he played against Santa Clara in the group stage of League Cup, and helped score in a 2–0 win. In the next month, he scored the first goal in a match of the same competition against Marítimo , ending the game at 3–0. In March 2012, he debuted in Champions League, as he scored the 2nd goal in a 2–0 victory over Zenit Saint Petersburg.

In July, Oliveira moved to Spain to join Deportivo de La Coruña as he got loaned for the whole season. In August, during the La Liga opening match against Osasuna, Oliveira made his debutant goal in the last minute, from a counter-attack in the 90th minute. In May 2013, he was in the middle of a controversy after he shushed the Ultras, following a goal against Espanyol, followed by his public apology.In July 2013, Oliveira joined Stade Rennais on a season-long move, and had the option to turn his stay at the club a permanent deal.  His first goal came in the same game during a match against Nice which ended at 1–2.

In December 2014, it was announced by Benfica that Oliveira would again be loaned out, this time to the Premier League club Swansea City. He was supposed to miss Swansea’s matches in January because of his commitments to the Ivory Coast national team during Africa Cup of Nations. He debuted in January, in a 1–1 tie with West Ham United. After a week, Oliveira began in a 0–5 loss to Chelsea. In April 2015, Oliveira scored for the first time for his new team in the form of an equalizer, as they went on to win 3–2 at Newcastle United.

In September 2015, Oliveira went back to the UK, and joined Nottingham Forest on loan for 2015–16. He debuted a week later against Queens Park Rangers, and made the winning shot in a 2–1 match. He played in a number of games for the first team, but only scored in November, in a game against Derby County. He scored a brace against Reading soon, first with a strike curled from 20 yards away, and the second, a volley shot from within a close range. He scored his fifth as a low shot against MK Dons. He soon scored against Leeds United. He closed the season as the highest scorer of the team with nine goals.

In August 2016, Oliveira came back to the UK team, and signed a deal of four years with Norwich City for an undisclosed sum of money. His first goal for the club was in a 2-2 draw in EFL Cup against Leeds United in October 2016. His first league goal for the team was against Brentford in December 2016, in a 5–0 victory. In the next four matches, he scored thrice – against Barnsley, Aston Villa and Reading.

In January 2017, he made the first hat-trick of his professional career in 3–0 victory over Derby County. After beginning suspended for lashing out on Kirk Broadfoot of Rotherham, he scored a looping header in February 2017 against Wigan Athletic. Earlier that month, he suffered a foot injury that kept him out for five weeks. He came back in March 2017, and netted the ball in a 7–1 win over Reading in April 2017. He gathered a brace against Leeds United in April 2017. He ended the season with twelve goals.

In his first pre-season in 2017, he scored 5 goals in 8 games. He made an equalizer against Fulham in his first appearance, which made him remove shirt off and reveal his name angrily to coach Daniel Farke. But Farke played the issue down by calling it an emotional outburst. In January 2018, Oliveira was reported to be the subject to Newcastle United’s bid of £11 million.

Oliveira was part of Portugal’s U-17 team in the UEFA European Championship 2008 qualifiers. In 2009, he was part of the squad for the European U-19 Championship qualifiers, but they failed to reach the finals. In the next year, he represented Portugal at European Championship, and scored a goal in a 2–0 victory over Italy. In May 2011, he was part of U-20 for Toulon Tournament 2011, and scored once in 3 games. He also helped the team end up second in FIFA World Cup that year, making four goals – which include the shot against Brazil in the final. He was declared as the Man of the match two times and received the Silver Ball as the tournament’s second best player. He debuted for the U-21 team in October 2011, in the qualification game of Euro 2013 qualification match against Poland. In November, he made a brace against Moldova in a 5–0 win of the same competition.

In February 2012, he was invited to join the senior team, and appear in a friendly with Poland, which eventually ended in a 0–0 draw. He was seen in the opener at the group stage against Germany.  He appeared three other times in the tournament, before Portugal exited in the semi-final. In the match of Portugal after Euro 2012, he made his first goal on an international scale, in a 2–0 victory over Panama. After staying absent for almost two years, Fernando Santos asked him to join the qualifier matches in the World Cup against the Faroe Islands and Hungary. He scored the closing goal for Portugal in the 5–1 victory to Faroe Islands.
